Life affirmed.
Like most, if not all people once they graduate...I am feeling uncertainty breathing down my neck!...Ever since i was born my parents and society in general keep bombarding the idea that I have to make 200k a year to be successful. I have to agree with my parents on this one! Money is important in life, the more you have the more you can benefit others!--> unless you lose your brain during the process of becoming successful. the process can actually convert you into a self-interested person who believes that since they worked so hard to make that 200k, they are the only ones that deserve to enjoy it, thus not sharing it with those they used to love. I've seen this process occur without fail, my uncle Chu 7 is notorious for his self-interested acts. He constantly calculates, every dollar, every grain of rice that leaves his pockets. He has been converted to such an extent that his kids never saw Disneyland before, even when he can well afford it. He has a family, but i doubt he loves them. His mom in Vietnam refuses to talk to him because she feels he does not care about her. Enough about my uncle and his conversion. What about us? will we be converted as we go though vocational school? med school? school in general? Will we make up justifications for our self interest such as, "oh, the reason why i am successful and my parents are not is because they are illiterate-->its not my fault they are poor!" Well, if this is the cause you are of no use to anyone even your self. The reason is because when you are converted you fail to see the world anymore, you only see yourself. People around you becomes your play-thing, your entertainment, your subjects, those poorer than you. When you give 90 % of your paychecks to your family, your friends, your strangers, what you get in return is NOTHING! just kidding! you get community of course, you get to play GOD by giving life! by you helping others and benefiting others you help build a better world! not just build your better world!....SO GET RICH AND HELP OTHERS! byeee!

My Game Plan for Life
My name is Hai H. Lam, I love philosophy because I believe it will ultimately liberate us from the lies designed to oppress and keep us from being happy. I decided to write this game plan for life in hope of finding some greater truth or better yet—a solution to the problem of unhappiness.
First of all, work sucks! The reason why it sucks is because the goal of it is to make who you work for more wealthy. Given the fact that you can also become richer in the process of making someone wealthier, you are still not happy. That is, unless you are making an obscured salary doing so. Yes, I am talking about those bio-chemists out there! This explains why most of the people out there are studying for 10 years in hopes of making that 250k salary! For me, 10 years is too long.
I want my 250k salary NOW! I know, I know, just by demanding it won’t get you what you want. But since I’m acting childish right now, mind as well “Go for Gold!”…I demand a 250k salary, not having to work my ass off, and having 1000 hours of free time to spend as I desire. This, ladies and gentlemen is the true key to happiness!—making an absurd amount of money, and having plenty of free time to enjoy it.
Well, this key is inefficient in the sense that you have to work to get what you want. What if, I can make a 250k salary and have fun while doing it! This way, everyday would be well spent. You wake up, eager to get to work because somehow—work defines you! My aunt such a person, she is the world’s greatest dry cleaner since ever. She pours her heart and soul into what she does. I recall the time when she drove 50 miles, snuck into a military base, begged a store clerk on base to sell her a glove that she needed to make her customer happy. That was the hardest $2.50 of her life, but some how she felt a sense of accomplishment and now wears it as a badge of honor.
My aunt is still quite unhappy however. She shops a lot, exercises a lot, and goes on vacation a lot too. Perhaps because she feels empty and somehow pretty clothes, a nice body, and exotic experiences fills that void. I similarly feel this way too or at least can see me feeling this way in the future. So if money is not the stuff of happiness, what is?
This brings me to my uncle on my mom’s side. To keep it simple, he is poor. To paint a clearer picture, he is beyond broke—he has no credit, is in debt, and will soon be evicted again. He has three boys, none of which are older than 12 years old. His wife does not work, and he is a freelance welder. His work is similar to the type you would find in rural Vietnam. By this I mean, his income is what he makes that day—no salary, no security or certainty. His family thinks I’m a saint because I gave them $400 dollars, when his father passed away. Believe me it’s much worse than that guy in that movie, “the Pursuit of Happiness”. If they made a movie about my uncle, it would be called “the Denial of Happiness” since he is illiterate and has a slight speech impediment. However, he is happy.
How can I be so sure he is happy? Well, he has a family—three of the most beautiful boys, I might add. He loves them from what I can tell, and he loves us too. He speaks and knows more about love than my aunt for sure. He does not understand what “true religion brand jeans” are, and haven’t been on a vacation since ever. But he is happy. I can tell that he gets sad sometimes, especially when my dad calls him a good for nothing fuck up, and a great inconvenience. But he is happy.
My oldest sister was basically that bitch in “legally blonde”, a young confused shopaholic that loves everything material—big houses, nice cars, and money more generally. HOWEVER! And this is a big “however”, recently, bless her heart, she had a child! His name is Joshua and he is a magician. When Joshua was born, he did the most impossible trick! He turned my sister into a selfless mother, who puts her own useless wants aside for the benefit of her son. She calls him, “my piece of shit, and my golden nugget”. She is now happy, from what I can tell.
Life isn’t about money, even though my dad thinks so. I believe that life is about community. If you make community like my sister and uncle, you got something to look forward too at the end of the day—even when life is hard. If you lost community, like my aunt—you’re going to make a lot of friends at Macy’s with those sales reps. If you are anything like me, you would make finding community your life—hopefully, then you will be happy.

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross - Feast
THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS , feast
, St. Maternus, Bishop of Cologne (+ c. 325)
Commentary of the day
Pope Benedict XVI : "He gave himself up to death and by his resurrection he destroyed death and restored life" (Eucharistic Prayer IV)
Reading
Numb. 21:4-9.
From Mount Hor they set out on the Red Sea road, to by-pass the land of
Edom. But with their patience worn out by the journey,
the people complained against God and Moses, "Why have you brought us up
from Egypt to die in this desert, where there is no food or water? We are
disgusted with this wretched food!"
In punishment the LORD sent among the people saraph serpents, which bit the
people so that many of them died.
Then the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned in complaining
against the LORD and you. Pray the LORD to take the serpents from us." So
Moses prayed for the people,
and the LORD said to Moses, "Make a saraph and mount it on a pole, and if
anyone who has been bitten looks at it, he will recover."
Moses accordingly made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and
whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent looked at the bronze
serpent, he recovered.
Jn 3:13-17.
No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven,
the Son of Man.
And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of
Man be lifted up,
so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life."
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who
believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but
that the world might be saved through him.

Homily the Paschal Vigil, 07/04/2007 (©Libreria Editrice Vaticana)
"He gave himself up to death and by his resurrection he destroyed death and restored life" (Eucharistic Prayer IV)
In the Creed we say about Christ's journey that he «descended into hell»...
The liturgy applies to Jesus' descent into the night of death the words of
Psalm 23[24]: «Lift up your heads, O gates; be lifted up, O ancient doors!»
The gates of death are closed, no one can return from there. There is no
key for those iron doors. But Christ has the key. His Cross opens wide the
gates of death, the stern doors. They are barred no longer. His Cross, his
radical love, is the key that opens them. The love of the One who, though
God, became man in order to die – this love has the power to open those
doors. This love is stronger than death. The Easter icons of
the Oriental Church show how Christ enters the world of the dead. He is
clothed with light, for God is light. «The night is bright as the day, the
darkness is as light» (cf. Ps 138[139]12). Entering the world of the dead,
Jesus bears the stigmata, the signs of his passion: his wounds, his
suffering, have become power: they are love that conquers death. He meets
Adam and all the men and women waiting in the night of death. As we look at
them, we can hear an echo of the prayer of Jonah: «Out of the belly of
Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice» (Jon 2:2). In the
incarnation, the Son of God became one with human beings – with Adam. But
only at this moment, when he accomplishes the supreme act of love by
descending into the night of death, does he bring the journey of the
incarnation to its completion. By his death he now clasps the hand of Adam,
of every man and woman who awaits him, and brings them to the light.

Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
St. John Chrysostom, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
Commentary of the day
Saint Teresa-Benedicta of the Cross [Edith Stein] : "Let him take up his cross, and follow me"
Reading
Is 50:4-9.
The Lord GOD has given me a well-trained tongue, That I might know how to
speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Morning after morning he
opens my ear that I may hear;
And I have not rebelled, have not turned back.
I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my
beard; My face I did not shield from buffets and spitting.
The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face
like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame.
He is near who upholds my right; if anyone wishes to oppose me, let us
appear together. Who disputes my right? Let him confront me.
See, the Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me wrong? Lo, they will all
wear out like cloth, the moth will eat them up.
James 2:14-18.
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not
have works? Can that faith save him?
If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day,
and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well," but
you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it?
So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
Indeed someone might say, "You have faith and I have works." Demonstrate
your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from
my works.
Mk 8:27-35.
Now Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi.
Along the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?"
They said in reply, "John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of
the prophets."
And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said to him in
reply, "You are the Messiah."
Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him.
He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be
rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed,
and rise after three days.
He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and
said, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human
beings do."
He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, "Whoever wishes
to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his
life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.

Love of the Cross, 24/11/1934 (©Institute of Carmelite Studies)
"Let him take up his cross, and follow me"
Being one with Christ is our sanctity, and progressively becoming one with
him our happiness on earth, the love of the cross in no way contradicts
being a joyful child of God. Helping Christ carry his cross fills one with
a strong and pure joy, and those who may and can do so, the builders of
God's kingdom, are the most authentic children of God. And so those who
have a predilection for the way of the cross by no means deny that Good
Friday is past and that the work of salvation has been accomplished. Only
those who are saved, only children of grace, can in fact be bearers of
Christ's cross. Only in union with the divine Head does human suffering
take an expiatory power. To suffer and to be happy although
suffering, to have one's feet on the earth, to walk on the dirty and rough
paths of this earth and yet to be enthroned with Christ at the Father's
right hand, to laugh and cry with the children of this world and
ceaselessly sing the praises of God with the choirs of angels - this is the
life of the Christian until the morning of eternity breaks forth.

St. Guy of Anderlecht, (+ c.1033)
Commentary of the day
Saint Hilary : "The river burst against that house but could not shake it"
Reading
1 Tim 1:15-17.
This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came
into the world to save sinners. Of these I am the foremost.
But for that reason I was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the
foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example for
those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life.
To the king of ages, incorruptible, invisible, the only God, honor and
glory forever and ever. Amen.
Lk 6:43-49.
A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good
fruit.
For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from
thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles.
A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but
an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness
of the heart the mouth speaks.
Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' but not do what I command?
I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, listens to my words,
and acts on them.
That one is like a person building a house, who dug deeply and laid the
foundation on rock; when the flood came, the river burst against that house
but could not shake it because it had been well built.
But the one who listens and does not act is like a person who built a house
on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, it
collapsed at once and was completely destroyed."

Commentary of the day
Saint Hilary (c.315-367), Bishop of Poitiers and Doctor of the Church
Commentary on Psalm 126[127], PL 9, 696
"The river burst against that house but could not shake it"
Unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain who build it»
(Ps127[126],1). «You are the temple of God and the Spirit of God dwells in
you» (1Co 3,16). Of this house and temple of God, which is full of teaching
and graces from God; of this dwelling containing holiness from God's own
heart, the same prophet has given this testimony: «Your temple is holy,
resplendent with justice» (Ps 65[64],5-6 Vg). Our holiness, justice and
chastity form a temple for God.
So then, this house must be built by God. No edifice constructed by
the work of human hands will last; nothing established according to the
teachings of this world will stand firm; our empty labors and diligent care
are useless protectors. Therefore it is for us to build in another way and
protect this house after another fashion. We are not to found it on soil,
on slippery and shifting sand, but must set its foundation on the prophets
and apostles.
We must raise it up with living stones, hold it in place by its capstone,
raise it up in gradual stages until it reaches mature manhood and the full
stature of the Christ's body (1P 2.5; Ep 2 20; 4:12-13). We must decorate
it with the brilliance and beauty of spiritual graces. If it is thus to be
constructed by God, that is to say according to his teachings, it will not
fall. And this house will extend into many others, because all that is
constructed by any believer is to the benefit of us all and for the
embellishment and increase of the blessed city.

Commentary of the day
Blessed Teresa of Calcutta : "Do good and lend, expecting nothing in return"
Reading
Coloss. 3:12-17.
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion,
kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,
bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance
against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do.
And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection.
And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you
were also called in one body. And be thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and
admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with
gratitude in your hearts to God.
And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the
Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Lk 6:27-38.
But to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate
you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well,
and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic.
Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours
do not demand it back.
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even
sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you?
Even sinners do the same.
If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit (is)
that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount.
But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting
nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of
the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Be merciful, just as (also) your Father is merciful.
Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not
be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.
Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together,
shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure
with which you measure will in return be measured out to you."

No Greater Love
"Do good and lend, expecting nothing in return"
Perhaps in an apartment or house next to yours there lives a blind man who
would welcome a visit from you to read the newspaper to him. Perhaps there
is a family that is in need of something of small importance to you,
something as simple as looking after their child for half an hour. There
are so many little things that are so small that a lot of people forget
them.Don't think have to be a simpleton to do the cooking.
Don't think that sitting, standing, coming and going, and all that you do
is not important to God.God does not ask you how many books
you've read, how many miracles you've done. He asks you if you did your
best for his sake. Can you say in all sincerity: "I did my best»? Even if
the best should be a failure, it must be our best. If you're really in love
with Christ, no matter how unimportant your work is, it will be better
done, from your heart. Your work will bear witness to your love. You can
wear yourself out at your work, you can even kill yourself at it, but until
it is mixed with love, it is of no value.

St. Peter Claver,Priest (1580-1654)
Commentary of the day
Isaac of Stella : "Blessed are you who weep now"
Reading
Coloss. 3:1-11.
If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is
seated at the right hand of God.
Think of what is above, not of what is on earth.
For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.
Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality,
impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry.
Because of these the wrath of God is coming (upon the disobedient).
By these you too once conducted yourselves, when you lived in that way.
But now you must put them all away: anger, fury, malice, slander, and
obscene language out of your mouths.
Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its
practices
and have put on the new self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the
image of its creator.
Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision,
barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all and in all.
Lk 6:20-26.
And raising his eyes toward his disciples he said: "Blessed are you who are
poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.
Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed
are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh.
Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult
you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.
Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great
in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way.
But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
But woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who
laugh now, for you will grieve and weep.
Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the
false prophets in this way.

Commentary of the day
Isaac of Stella (?-c.1171), Cistercian monk
Sermon 2 for All Saints, 13-20
"Blessed are you who weep now"
"Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted" (Mt 5:5). By
this saying the Lord wants us to understand that the path of joy lies in
tears. It is through desolation one goes to consolation; in losing one's
life that one finds it; in forsaking it that one possesses it; in hating it
that one loves it; in despising it that one keeps it (cf. Mt 16,24f.). If
you would know and have the mastery over yourself, enter within yourself
and do not seek yourself without... Return to yourself, you sinner, return
to where you are, to your heart ... Will not the one who returns to himself
discover himself to be far away, like the prodigal son, in a region of
unlikeness, in a foreign land, where he sits and weeps at the memory of his
father and his native country? (Lk 15,17) ...
"Adam, where are you? "(Genesis 3,9) Perhaps still in the shadows, so as
not to see yourself, you are sewing leaves together in a vain desire to
cover your shame, looking at what is around you and what belongs to you ..
Look inside, look at yourself ... Return within yourself, you sinner,
return to your soul. See and weep for this soul subject to vanity and
restlessness who cannot set himself free from his captivity ... It is
clear, my brethren, that we live outside ourselves, we are forgetful of
ourselves whenever we fritter our lives away in empty pursuits or
distractions decked out with trifles. That is why Wisdom is more concerned
to invite us to the house of repentance than the house of feasting, that is
to say to call back into himself the man outside himself, saying: "Blessed
are they that mourn" and in another passage: "Woe to you who laugh now."
My brethren, let us groan in the presence of the Lord whose goodness moves
him to forgive; let us turn to him "with fasting, weeping and mourning "
(Joel 2,12) so that one day his ... consolation may delight our souls.
Blessed indeed are those who weep now, not because they are weeping but
because they shall be comforted. Weeping is the way, blessedness the
consolation.

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Feast
The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Feast
Commentary of the day
Saint Andrew of Crete : Today is the dawn of our salvation
Reading
Micah 5:1-4.
But you, Bethlehem-Ephrathah too small to be among the clans of Judah, From
you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel; Whose origin
is from of old, from ancient times.
(Therefore the Lord will give them up, until the time when she who is to
give birth has borne, And the rest of his brethren shall return to the
children of Israel.)
He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of the LORD, in
the majestic name of the LORD, his God; And they shall remain, for now his
greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth;
he shall be peace. If Assyria invades our country and treads upon our land,
We shall raise against it seven shepherds, eight men of royal rank;
Mt 1:1-16.18-23.
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of
Abraham.
Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the
father of Judah and his brothers.
Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez
became the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram,
Ram the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab. Boaz became the father
of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse,
Jesse the father of David the king. David became the father of Solomon,
whose mother had been the wife of Uriah.
Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah,
Abijah the father of Asaph.
Asaph became the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram,
Joram the father of Uzziah.
Uzziah became the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the
father of Hezekiah.
Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amos, Amos
the father of Josiah.
Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the
Babylonian exile.
After the Babylonian exile, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel,
Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
Zerubbabel the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim, Eliakim
the father of Azor,
Azor the father of Zadok. Zadok became the father of Achim, Achim the
father of Eliud,
Eliud the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan, Matthan
the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who
is called the Messiah.
Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary
was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found
with child through the holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose
her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him
in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary
your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child
has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save
his people from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall
name him Emmanuel, which means "God is with us."

Homily 1 for the Nativity of the Holy Mother of God; PG 97, 805 (trans. Breviary)
Today is the dawn of our salvation
We are no longer to be enslaved by the elemental spirits of the world, as
the apostle Paul says, or held in the yoke of slavery to the letter of the
law (Col 2,8 ; Rom 7,6). This is the summary of the benefits of Christ for
us; this is the unveiling of the mystery; this is nature made new: God is
made man, and human nature assumed by God is deified. But so radiant, so
glorious a visitation of God to us needed some prelude of joy to introduce
to us the great gift of salvation. The present feast is such: the prelude
is the birth of the Mother of God, and the concluding act is the union
which is destined between the Word and human nature. A virgin
is now born..., and is made ready to be mother of God, the king of all for
ever... A double gain will be ours: we shall be led towards the truth, and
we shall be led away from a life of slavery to the letter of the law. How
will this be? Clearly, inasmuch as the shadow yields to the presence of the
light, and grace introduces freedom in place of the letter. The present
feast stands on the border between these: it joins us to the truth instead
of signs and figures, and it brings in the new in place of the old.Let the whole creation therefore sing praise and dance and unite to
celebrate the glories of this day. Today let there be one common feast of
those in heaven and those on earth. Let everything that is, in the world
and above the world, join together in rejoicing. For today a shrine is
built for the Creator of the universe. The creature is newly made ready as
a divine dwelling for the Creator.

Monday of the Twenty-third week in Ordinary Time
St. Cloud, Priest (522-c.560)
Commentary of the day
Saint Ambrose : "There was a man there whose right hand was withered"
Reading
Coloss. 1:24-29.2:1-3.
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling
up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body,
which is the church,
of which I am a minister in accordance with God's stewardship given to me
to bring to completion for you the word of God,
the mystery hidden from ages and from generations past. But now it has been
manifested to his holy ones,
to whom God chose to make known the riches of the glory of this mystery
among the Gentiles; it is Christ in you, the hope for glory.
It is he whom we proclaim, admonishing everyone and teaching everyone with
all wisdom, that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.
For this I labor and struggle, in accord with the exercise of his power
working within me.
For I want you to know how great a struggle I am having for you and for
those in Laodicea and all who have not seen me face to face,
that their hearts may be encouraged as they are brought together in love,
to have all the richness of fully assured understanding, for the knowledge
of the mystery of God, Christ,
in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Lk 6:6-11.
On another sabbath he went into the synagogue and taught, and there was a
man there whose right hand was withered.
The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely to see if he would cure
on the sabbath so that they might discover a reason to accuse him.
But he realized their intentions and said to the man with the withered
hand, "Come up and stand before us." And he rose and stood there.
Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the sabbath
rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?"
Looking around at them all, he then said to him, "Stretch out your hand."
He did so and his hand was restored.
But they became enraged and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.

Saint Ambrose (c.340-397), Bishop of Milan and Doctor of the Church
Commentary on Saint Luke's Gospel, V, 39 (SC 45, p.197 rev.)
"There was a man there whose right hand was withered"
The same hand that Adam stretched out to pluck the fruit of the
forbidden tree was filled by the Lord with the sap of good deeds so that,
dried up by sin, it might be healed by its good deeds. On this occasion
Christ took to task those enemies of his who, by their false
interpretations, violated the commands of the Law. They considered that
people should even set aside good deeds on the Sabbath day, whereas the Law
was foreshadowing in the present the outlines of the future when, without
any doubt at all, it will be evil that will no longer be working, not
good... You heard, then, the Lord's words: «Stretch out your hand.»
Here is the cure for us all. And as for you who believe your hands are
clean, beware lest avarice and beware lest sacrilege paralyse it. Stretch
it out frequently: stretch it out towards the poor man who is begging you;
stretch it out to assist a neighbour, to bring help to a widow, to rescue
from injustice someone you see to be subjected to undeserved humiliation;
stretch it out towards God for your sins. This is how our hands are
stretched out; this is how they heal.

Thursday of the Twenty-second week in Ordinary Time
St. Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church (c.540-604)
Commentary of the day
Saint Antony of Padua : "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men"
Reading
Coloss. 1:9-14.
Therefore, from the day we heard this, we do not cease praying for you and
asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will through all
spiritual wisdom and understanding
to live in a manner worthy of the Lord, so as to be fully pleasing, in
every good work bearing fruit and growing in the knowledge of God,
strengthened with every power, in accord with his glorious might, for all
endurance and patience, with joy
giving thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the
inheritance of the holy ones in light.
He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the
kingdom of his beloved Son,
in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Lk 5:1-11.
While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God,
he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret.
He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked
and were washing their nets.
Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to
put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the
crowds from the boat.
After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water
and lower your nets for a catch."
Simon said in reply, "Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught
nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets."
When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets
were tearing.
They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them.
They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking.
When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, "Depart
from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man."
For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all
those with him,
and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of
Simon. Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be
catching men."
When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and
followed him.

Sermons for Sundays and Saints' days
"Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men"
«At your word I will lower the nets.» It is at the command of divine grace
and supernatural inspiration that the nets of preaching are to be spread
out. Otherwise the preacher wastes his time in lowering the lines of his
words. People's faith is won, not by carefully composed speeches but the
grace of a divine vocation... O fruitful humility! When those who so far
haven't caught a thing put their trust in Christ's word, they catch a great
number of fish... «At your word I will lower the nets.»
Whenever I lowered them on my own I wanted to keep what belongs to you for
myself. It was myself I was preaching and not you; my words, not yours.
That's why I caught nothing. Or if I did catch something, it wasn't fish
but frogs, only good for croaking my own praise... «At your
word I will lower the nets.» Running out the net at the word of Jesus
Christ means not attributing anything to oneself but all to him; it means
practising what one preaches. Then a great number of fish will be
caught.

Commentary of the day
Saint Eucherius : "Jesus left and went to a deserted place"
Reading
Coloss. 1:1-8.
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our
brother,
to the holy ones and faithful brothers in Christ in Colossae: grace to you
and peace from God our Father.
We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we
pray for you,
for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love that you have
for all the holy ones
because of the hope reserved for you in heaven. Of this you have already
heard through the word of truth, the gospel,
that has come to you. Just as in the whole world it is bearing fruit and
growing, so also among you, from the day you heard it and came to know the
grace of God in truth,
as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow slave, who is a
trustworthy minister of Christ on your behalf
and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.
Lk 4:38-44.
After he left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon's
mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with
him about her.
He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up
immediately and waited on them.
At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to
him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them.
And demons also came out from many, shouting, "You are the Son of God." But
he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he
was the Messiah.
At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went
looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from
leaving them.
But he said to them, "To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news
of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent."
And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

Commentary of the day
Saint Eucherius (?-c.450), Bishop of Lyons
In praise of the desert
"Jesus left and went to a deserted place"
Might we not reasonably suggest that the desert is a limitless temple for
our God? Because undoubtedly, someone living in silence is going to take
pleasure in solitary places. It is there that he often makes himself known
to his saints; it is under cover of the solitude that he condescends to
encounter people. It was in the desert that Moses saw God, his
face bathed in light... It was there that he was permitted to converse
familiarly with the Lord; he exchanged speech with him; he conversed with
the Lord of heaven just as people habitually converse with their fellows.
It was there he received the staff that had power to work wonders and,
after entering the desert as a shepherd of sheep, he left the desert as a
shepherd of peoples (Ex 3; 33,11; 34). Similarly, when the
people of God were to be set free from Egypt and delivered from their
earthly works, did they not make their way into a place apart and take
refuge in the solitudes? Yes indeed, it was in the desert that it was to
draw near to this God who snatched them out of their bondage... And the
Lord made himself the leader of his people, guiding them across the desert.
Day and night along the way he set a pillar, a burning flame or a shining
cloud, as a sign from heaven... Thus the children of Israel, while living
in the solitudes of the desert, attained the vision of God's throne and
heard his voice... Must I add that they did not reach the
land they desired until they had sojourned in the desert? That the people
might one day enter into possession of a land where milk and honey flowed
they had first to pass through dry and uncultivated places. It is always by
means of camps in the desert that we make our way towards our true
homeland. Let those who wish to see «the bounty of the Lord in the land of
the living» (Ps 27[26],13) dwell in an uninhabitable land. Let those who
would become citizens of heaven become guests of the desert.

Tuesday of the Twenty-second week in Ordinary Time
St. Giles of Castaneda, Abbot (640-720)
Commentary of the day
Diadochus of Photike : "Be quiet! Come out of him!"
Reading
1 Thess. 5:1-6.9-11.
Concerning times and seasons, brothers, you have no need for anything to be
written to you.
For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a
thief at night.
When people are saying, "Peace and security," then sudden disaster comes
upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
But you, brothers, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a
thief.
For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are
not of the night or of darkness.
Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and
sober.
For God did not destine us for wrath, but to gain salvation through our
Lord Jesus Christ,
who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live
together with him.
Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, as indeed you
do.
Lk 4:31-37.
Jesus then went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee. He taught them on the
sabbath,
and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority.
In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and
he cried out in a loud voice,
Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to
destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!
Jesus rebuked him and said, "Be quiet! Come out of him!" Then the demon
threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him
any harm.
They were all amazed and said to one another, "What is there about his
word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and
they come out."
And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.

Commentary of the day
Diadochus of Photike (c.400-?), Bishop
A century on knowledge, 78-80, in the Philocalia
"Be quiet! Come out of him!"
Baptism, which is the bath of holiness, takes away the stain of our sins
but does not as yet alter the dividedness of our wills nor prevent the evil
spirits from fighting against us or engaging us in delusions.... But God's
grace has its dwelling in the depth of our soul, that is in the
understanding. For it is said that «all glorious is the king's daughter
within» (Ps 45[44],14): she does not show herself to demons. That is why it
is from the very depths of our hearts that we seem to feel the divine
longing spring up as we fervently call God to mind. But then the evil
spirits jump into our bodily senses and conceal themselves there, taking
advantage of a relaxation of the flesh... Thus, according to the divine
apostle Paul, our understanding always takes delight in the law of the
Spirit (Rom 7,22) but our fleshly senses want to be carried away down the
steep slopes of pleasure...«The light shines in the darkness
and the darkness has not received it» (cf Jn 1,5)...: God's Word, the true
light, counted it fitting to make himself known to creation in his own
flesh by lighting the light of knowledge within us in his immeasurable love
for humankind. The spirit of the world did not accept God's design, that is
to say did not know it...; however, that wonderful theologian, John the
evangelist, adds: «He is the true light enlightening everyone coming into
the world. He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, and
the world did not know him. He came to what was his own but his own people
did not accept him. But to those who did accept him he gave power to become
children of God» (v.9-12). It was not Satan whom the evangelist says did
not accept the true light since, from the beginning, the light was a
stranger to him since it does not shine in him. But he rightly criticises
those people who understand God's power and wonders but, because of their
darkened hearts, don't want to approach the light of knowing him.

Monday of the Twenty-second week in Ordinary Time
Saint Raymund Nonnatus, (1204-1240)
Commentary of the day
Saint Bonaventure : "Isn't this the son of Joseph?"
Reading
1 Thess. 4:13-18.
We do not want you to be unaware, brothers, about those who have fallen
asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus,
bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
Indeed, we tell you this, on the word of the Lord, that we who are alive,
who are left until the coming of the Lord, will surely not precede those
who have fallen asleep.
For the Lord himself, with a word of command, with the voice of an
archangel and with the trumpet of God, will come down from heaven, and the
dead in Christ will rise first.
Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them
in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Thus we shall always be with the
Lord.
Therefore, console one another with these words.
Lk 4:16-30.
He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his
custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read
and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and
found the passage where it was written:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to
bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to
captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go
free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord."
Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and
the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.
He said to them, "Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your
hearing."
And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came
from his mouth. They also asked, "Isn't this the son of Joseph?"
He said to them, "Surely you will quote me this proverb, 'Physician, cure
yourself,' and say, 'Do here in your native place the things that we heard
were done in Capernaum.'"
And he said, "Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native
place.
Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah
when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine
spread over the entire land.
It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in
Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the
prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian."
When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with
fury.
They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the
hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong.
But he passed through the midst of them and went away.

Saint Bonaventure (1221-1274), Franciscan, Doctor of the Church
Meditations on the life of Christ ; Opera omnia, vol. 12,
"Isn't this the son of Joseph?"
It seems to me that they have attained the highest degree of all who, with
all their hearts and without duplicity, have sufficient mastery over
themselves to seek nothing other than to be despised, accounted for nothing
and live in utter abasement... So long as you haven't attained to this,
believe yourself to have achieved nothing. For since, indeed, we are all
«unprofitable servants», in the Lord's words (Lk 17,10), even were we to
carry out everything well, so long as we haven't attained this degree of
lowliness we shan't yet be standing in the truth but will be, and will be
proceeding in vanity... You know, too, how the Lord Jesus
began to act first of all before he began to teach. Later on he would say:
«Learn from me for I am meek and humble in heart» (Mt 11,29). But first of
all he wanted to put this truly into practice and without duplicity. He did
this with all his heart just as, with all his heart and in very truth, he
was humble and meek. There was no «yes» and «no» in him (cf 2Cor 1,19). He
immersed himself so deeply in humility, scorn and abjection, annihilated
himself so much in the eyes of all, that when he started to preach,
proclaim God's wonders and accomplish miracles and wonderful works, no one
showed him any regard. He was despised and mocked, saying: «Isn't this the
carpenter's son?» and similar words. So the words of the apostle Paul
became true: «He humbled himself, taking the form of a slave» (Phil 2,7).
Not just an ordinary servant through his incarnation, but a slave of no
account according to the manner of a humble and despised life.

St. Fiaker, Anchorite
Commentary of the day
Vatican Council II : Peace comes from the human heart
Reading
Deut 4:1-2.6-8.
"Now, Israel, hear the statutes and decrees which I am teaching you to
observe, that you may live, and may enter in and take possession of the
land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.
In your observance of the commandments of the LORD, your God, which I
enjoin upon you, you shall not add to what I command you nor subtract from
it.
Observe them carefully, for thus will you give evidence of your wisdom and
intelligence to the nations, who will hear of all these statutes and say,
'This great nation is truly a wise and intelligent people.'
For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the LORD,
our God, is to us whenever we call upon him?
Or what great nation has statutes and decrees that are as just as this
whole law which I am setting before you today?
James 1:17-18.21-22.27.
all good giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the
Father of lights, with whom there is no alteration or shadow caused by
change.
He willed to give us birth by the word of truth that we may be a kind of
firstfruits of his creatures.
Therefore, put away all filth and evil excess and humbly welcome the word
that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls.
Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves.
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to
care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself
unstained by the world.
Mk 7:1-8.14-15.21-23.
Now when the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem
gathered around him,
they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that
is, unwashed, hands.
(For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews, do not eat without carefully
washing their hands, keeping the tradition of the elders.
And on coming from the marketplace they do not eat without purifying
themselves. And there are many other things that they have traditionally
observed, the purification of cups and jugs and kettles (and beds).)
So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him, "Why do your disciples not
follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean
hands?"
He responded, "Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is
written: 'This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far
from me;
In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.'
You disregard God's commandment but cling to human tradition."
He summoned the crowd again and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and
understand.
Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things
that come out from within are what defile."
From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity,
theft, murder,
adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy,
arrogance, folly.
All these evils come from within and they defile."

Peace comes from the human heart
The problems of peace and of disarmament have already been the subject of
extensive, strenuous and constant examination. Together with international
meetings dealing with these problems, such studies should be regarded as
the first steps toward solving these serious questions, and should be
promoted with even greater urgency by way of yielding concrete results in
the future. Nevertheless, men should take heed not to entrust themselves
only to the efforts of some, while not caring about their own attitudes...
It does no good to work for peace as long as feelings of
hostility, contempt and distrust, as well as racial hatred and unbending
ideologies, continue to divide men and place them in opposing camps.
Consequently there is above all a pressing need for a renewed education of
attitudes and for new inspiration in public opinion. Those who are
dedicated to the work of education, particularly of the young, or who mold
public opinion, should consider it their most weighty task to instruct all
in fresh sentiments of peace. Indeed, we all need a change of heart as we
regard the entire world and those tasks which we can perform in unison for
the betterment of our race.

The Martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist - Memorial
The Beheading of John the Baptist,Martyr
Commentary of the day
Saint Bede the Venerable : Forerunner in death as in life
Reading
Jer. 1:17-19.
But do you gird your loins; stand up and tell them all that I command you.
Be not crushed on their account, as though I would leave you crushed before
them;
For it is I this day who have made you a fortified city, A pillar of iron,
a wall of brass, against the whole land: Against Judah's kings and princes,
against its priests and people.
They will fight against you, but not prevail over you, for I am with you to
deliver you, says the LORD.
Mk 6:17-29.
Herod was the one who had John arrested and bound in prison on account of
Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married.
John had said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's
wife."
Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was
unable to do so.
Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him
in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he
liked to listen to him.
She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet
for his courtiers, his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee.
Herodias's own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod
and his guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask of me whatever you wish and
I will grant it to you."
He even swore (many things) to her, "I will grant you whatever you ask of
me, even to half of my kingdom."
She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" She replied,
"The head of John the Baptist."
The girl hurried back to the king's presence and made her request, "I want
you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist."
The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he
did not wish to break his word to her.
So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his
head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison.
He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl. The girl in
turn gave it to her mother.
When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body and laid it
in a tomb.

Hymn for the martyrdom of John the Baptist ; PL 94, 630
Forerunner in death as in life
Great forerunner of grace and messenger of the truth,John the
Baptist, burning light for Christ, became an evangelist of the eternal
Light. The prophetic witness that unceasingly he gave through
his message, life and work,he stamps today with his blood and
martyrdom. He had always gone before his Lord:in birth he
announced his coming to the world;in baptising repentant sinners in
the Jordanhe prefigured him who came to institute baptism. And
John the Baptist also went beforehand through the death of the Redeemer,
his Savior, who restored life to the worldby shedding his blood
through love on his behalf. A cruel tyrant might well conceal
him in prison and in chains, chains could not bind, in Christ, the one
whose heart's freedom opens to the Kingdom. How might the darkness and
torture of a gloomy dungeongain mastery over him who beholds Christ's
glory, who receives from Christ the gifts of the Holy Spirit?Today he rejoices to complete his mission as forerunnerby his
departure from this world. What he witnessed to in his
lifetime, the Christ who comes and even now is here,he proclaims
today by his death. How could the dwellings of the dead hold back this
messenger? All the righteous, with the prophets and martyrs,
rejoiceand go with him to meet the Savior. They all surround
John with their love and praisesand join him in imploring Christ to
come at last to all his own.O great forerunner of the Redeemer,
he no longer tarrieswho will set you free from death forever.Guided by your Lord, enter with all the saints into his glory!

Friday of the Twenty-first week in Ordinary Time
St. Augustine, bishop and doctor of the Church
Commentary of the day
Saint Gregory of Nazianzen : "Behold, the bridegroom!"
Reading
1 Thess. 4:1-8.
Finally, brothers, we earnestly ask and exhort you in the Lord Jesus that,
as you received from us how you should conduct yourselves to please
God--and as you are conducting yourselves--you do so even more.
For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.
This is the will of God, your holiness: that you refrain from immorality,
that each of you know how to acquire a wife for himself in holiness and
honor,
not in lustful passion as do the Gentiles who do not know God;
not to take advantage of or exploit a brother in this matter, for the Lord
is an avenger in all these things, as we told you before and solemnly
affirmed.
For God did not call us to impurity but to holiness.
Therefore, whoever disregards this, disregards not a human being but God,
who (also) gives his holy Spirit to you.
Mt 25:1-13.
Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps
and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Five of them were foolish and five were wise.
The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them,
but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.
Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell
asleep.
At midnight, there was a cry, 'Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet
him!'
Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps.
The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps
are going out.'
But the wise ones replied, 'No, for there may not be enough for us and you.
Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.'
While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready
went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked.
Afterwards the other virgins came and said, 'Lord, Lord, open the door for
us!'
But he said in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.'
Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.Saint Gregory of Nazianzen (330-390), Bishop and Doctor of the Church

"Behold, the bridegroom!"
The place before the great sanctuary in which you will stand immediatelly
after your baptism symbolizes the glory of the world to come. The singing
of psalms with which you will be received is a prelude to the hymns of
heaven. The lamps you will light prefigure that great procession of lights
in which we shall go to meet the Bridegroom with the bright lamps of faith,
our souls radiant and pure. Very careful shall we be not to
fall asleep, in case the awaited One should arrive unexpectedly. Nor shall
we come without the oil of good works, for fear of being excluded from the
bridal chamber... Swiftly the Bridegroom will enter and the wise will go in
with him, but the foolish will be shut out because when it was time to
enter they were still busy preparing themselves. They will lament bitterly
when they learn too late the penalty for their carelessness... In another way, they resemble the guests who failed to attend the wedding
feast a noble father gave for a noble bridegroom. One did not come because
he had recently married, another because he had just bought a field, a
third because he had bought a yoke of oxen... There is no place in heaven
for the arrogant and careless, nor yet for one dressed in rags instead of a
wedding garment, even though while on earth such a one may think himself
fit for the resplendence of the world to come and, deceived by vain hopes,
slip in among the faithful without their knowledge. What will
the next world be like? Once we are within the Bridegroom knows what he
will teach the souls that have entered with him, and how he will be united
with them. I believe that he will live with them and teach them yet higher
and holier mysteries.
