My job sucks!

Hi... Today I showed up for work for the third time! Work sucks balls! It's times like these when u really appreciate your parents, the luxuries in your life, and people who work in general. On Sunday I'm going to send my resignation letter. The reason why I have decided to do this is because I don't need the money and I rather be a spoiled brat! This is the truth! Work is hard, but going nowhere is harder! My job promises me nothing! So I'm out! Hehe!

Ur choices + others = ur life

My Game Plan for Life

My Game Plan for Life

My name is Hai H. Lam, I love philosophy because I believe it will ultimately liberate us from the lies designed to oppress and keep us from being happy. I decided to write this game plan for life in hope of finding some greater truth or better yet—a solution to the problem of unhappiness.

First of all, work sucks! The reason why it sucks is because the goal of it is to make who you work for more wealthy. Given the fact that you can also become richer in the process of making someone wealthier, you are still not happy. That is, unless you are making an obscured salary doing so. Yes, I am talking about those bio-chemists out there! This explains why most of the people out there are studying for 10 years in hopes of making that 250k salary! For me, 10 years is too long.

I want my 250k salary NOW! I know, I know, just by demanding it won’t get you what you want. But since I’m acting childish right now, mind as well “Go for Gold!”…I demand a 250k salary, not having to work my ass off, and having 1000 hours of free time to spend as I desire. This, ladies and gentlemen is the true key to happiness!—making an absurd amount of money, and having plenty of free time to enjoy it.

Well, this key is inefficient in the sense that you have to work to get what you want. What if, I can make a 250k salary and have fun while doing it! This way, everyday would be well spent. You wake up, eager to get to work because somehow—work defines you! My aunt such a person, she is the world’s greatest dry cleaner since ever. She pours her heart and soul into what she does. I recall the time when she drove 50 miles, snuck into a military base, begged a store clerk on base to sell her a glove that she needed to make her customer happy. That was the hardest $2.50 of her life, but some how she felt a sense of accomplishment and now wears it as a badge of honor.

My aunt is still quite unhappy however. She shops a lot, exercises a lot, and goes on vacation a lot too. Perhaps because she feels empty and somehow pretty clothes, a nice body, and exotic experiences fills that void. I similarly feel this way too or at least can see me feeling this way in the future. So if money is not the stuff of happiness, what is?

This brings me to my uncle on my mom’s side. To keep it simple, he is poor. To paint a clearer picture, he is beyond broke—he has no credit, is in debt, and will soon be evicted again. He has three boys, none of which are older than 12 years old. His wife does not work, and he is a freelance welder. His work is similar to the type you would find in rural Vietnam. By this I mean, his income is what he makes that day—no salary, no security or certainty. His family thinks I’m a saint because I gave them $400 dollars, when his father passed away. Believe me it’s much worse than that guy in that movie, “the Pursuit of Happiness”. If they made a movie about my uncle, it would be called “the Denial of Happiness” since he is illiterate and has a slight speech impediment. However, he is happy.

How can I be so sure he is happy? Well, he has a family—three of the most beautiful boys, I might add. He loves them from what I can tell, and he loves us too. He speaks and knows more about love than my aunt for sure. He does not understand what “true religion brand jeans” are, and haven’t been on a vacation since ever. But he is happy. I can tell that he gets sad sometimes, especially when my dad calls him a good for nothing fuck up, and a great inconvenience. But he is happy.

My oldest sister was basically that bitch in “legally blonde”, a young confused shopaholic that loves everything material—big houses, nice cars, and money more generally. HOWEVER! And this is a big “however”, recently, bless her heart, she had a child! His name is Joshua and he is a magician. When Joshua was born, he did the most impossible trick! He turned my sister into a selfless mother, who puts her own useless wants aside for the benefit of her son. She calls him, “my piece of shit, and my golden nugget”. She is now happy, from what I can tell.

Life isn’t about money, even though my dad thinks so. I believe that life is about community. If you make community like my sister and uncle, you got something to look forward too at the end of the day—even when life is hard. If you lost community, like my aunt—you’re going to make a lot of friends at Macy’s with those sales reps. If you are anything like me, you would make finding community your life—hopefully, then you will be happy.

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross - Feast

THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS , feast
, St. Maternus, Bishop of Cologne (+ c. 325)

Commentary of the day
Pope Benedict XVI : "He gave himself up to death and by his resurrection he destroyed death and restored life" (Eucharistic Prayer IV)

Reading

Numb. 21:4-9.
From Mount Hor they set out on the Red Sea road, to by-pass the land of
Edom. But with their patience worn out by the journey,
the people complained against God and Moses, "Why have you brought us up
from Egypt to die in this desert, where there is no food or water? We are
disgusted with this wretched food!"
In punishment the LORD sent among the people saraph serpents, which bit the
people so that many of them died.
Then the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned in complaining
against the LORD and you. Pray the LORD to take the serpents from us." So
Moses prayed for the people,
and the LORD said to Moses, "Make a saraph and mount it on a pole, and if
anyone who has been bitten looks at it, he will recover."
Moses accordingly made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and
whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent looked at the bronze
serpent, he recovered.

Jn 3:13-17.
No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven,
the Son of Man.
And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of
Man be lifted up,
so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life."
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who
believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but
that the world might be saved through him.

Commentary of the day

Pope Benedict XVI
Homily the Paschal Vigil, 07/04/2007 (©Libreria Editrice Vaticana)

"He gave himself up to death and by his resurrection he destroyed death and restored life" (Eucharistic Prayer IV)

In the Creed we say about Christ's journey that he «descended into hell»...
The liturgy applies to Jesus' descent into the night of death the words of
Psalm 23[24]: «Lift up your heads, O gates; be lifted up, O ancient doors!»
The gates of death are closed, no one can return from there. There is no
key for those iron doors. But Christ has the key. His Cross opens wide the
gates of death, the stern doors. They are barred no longer. His Cross, his
radical love, is the key that opens them. The love of the One who, though
God, became man in order to die – this love has the power to open those
doors. This love is stronger than death. The Easter icons of
the Oriental Church show how Christ enters the world of the dead. He is
clothed with light, for God is light. «The night is bright as the day, the
darkness is as light» (cf. Ps 138[139]12). Entering the world of the dead,
Jesus bears the stigmata, the signs of his passion: his wounds, his
suffering, have become power: they are love that conquers death. He meets
Adam and all the men and women waiting in the night of death. As we look at
them, we can hear an echo of the prayer of Jonah: «Out of the belly of
Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice» (Jon 2:2). In the
incarnation, the Son of God became one with human beings – with Adam. But
only at this moment, when he accomplishes the supreme act of love by
descending into the night of death, does he bring the journey of the
incarnation to its completion. By his death he now clasps the hand of Adam,
of every man and woman who awaits him, and brings them to the light.

Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

St. John Chrysostom, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

Commentary of the day
Saint Teresa-Benedicta of the Cross [Edith Stein] : "Let him take up his cross, and follow me"

Reading

Is 50:4-9.
The Lord GOD has given me a well-trained tongue, That I might know how to
speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Morning after morning he
opens my ear that I may hear;
And I have not rebelled, have not turned back.
I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my
beard; My face I did not shield from buffets and spitting.
The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face
like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame.
He is near who upholds my right; if anyone wishes to oppose me, let us
appear together. Who disputes my right? Let him confront me.
See, the Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me wrong? Lo, they will all
wear out like cloth, the moth will eat them up.

James 2:14-18.
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not
have works? Can that faith save him?
If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day,
and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well," but
you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it?
So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
Indeed someone might say, "You have faith and I have works." Demonstrate
your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from
my works.

Mk 8:27-35.
Now Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi.
Along the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?"
They said in reply, "John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of
the prophets."
And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said to him in
reply, "You are the Messiah."
Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him.
He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be
rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed,
and rise after three days.
He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and
said, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human
beings do."
He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, "Whoever wishes
to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his
life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.

Saint Teresa-Benedicta of the Cross [Edith Stein] (1891-1942), Carmelite, martyr, co-patron of Europe
Love of the Cross, 24/11/1934 (©Institute of Carmelite Studies)

"Let him take up his cross, and follow me"

Being one with Christ is our sanctity, and progressively becoming one with
him our happiness on earth, the love of the cross in no way contradicts
being a joyful child of God. Helping Christ carry his cross fills one with
a strong and pure joy, and those who may and can do so, the builders of
God's kingdom, are the most authentic children of God. And so those who
have a predilection for the way of the cross by no means deny that Good
Friday is past and that the work of salvation has been accomplished. Only
those who are saved, only children of grace, can in fact be bearers of
Christ's cross. Only in union with the divine Head does human suffering
take an expiatory power. To suffer and to be happy although
suffering, to have one's feet on the earth, to walk on the dirty and rough
paths of this earth and yet to be enthroned with Christ at the Father's
right hand, to laugh and cry with the children of this world and
ceaselessly sing the praises of God with the choirs of angels - this is the
life of the Christian until the morning of eternity breaks forth.

Saturday of the Twenty-third week in Ordinary Time

St. Guy of Anderlecht, (+ c.1033)

Commentary of the day
Saint Hilary : "The river burst against that house but could not shake it"

Reading

1 Tim 1:15-17.
This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came
into the world to save sinners. Of these I am the foremost.
But for that reason I was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the
foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example for
those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life.
To the king of ages, incorruptible, invisible, the only God, honor and
glory forever and ever. Amen.

Lk 6:43-49.
A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good
fruit.
For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from
thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles.
A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but
an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness
of the heart the mouth speaks.
Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' but not do what I command?
I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, listens to my words,
and acts on them.
That one is like a person building a house, who dug deeply and laid the
foundation on rock; when the flood came, the river burst against that house
but could not shake it because it had been well built.
But the one who listens and does not act is like a person who built a house
on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, it
collapsed at once and was completely destroyed."

Commentary of the day

Saint Hilary (c.315-367), Bishop of Poitiers and Doctor of the Church
Commentary on Psalm 126[127], PL 9, 696

"The river burst against that house but could not shake it"

Unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain who build it»
(Ps127[126],1). «You are the temple of God and the Spirit of God dwells in
you» (1Co 3,16). Of this house and temple of God, which is full of teaching
and graces from God; of this dwelling containing holiness from God's own
heart, the same prophet has given this testimony: «Your temple is holy,
resplendent with justice» (Ps 65[64],5-6 Vg). Our holiness, justice and
chastity form a temple for God.

So then, this house must be built by God. No edifice constructed by
the work of human hands will last; nothing established according to the
teachings of this world will stand firm; our empty labors and diligent care
are useless protectors. Therefore it is for us to build in another way and
protect this house after another fashion. We are not to found it on soil,
on slippery and shifting sand, but must set  its foundation on the prophets
and apostles.

We must raise it up with living stones, hold it in place by its capstone,
raise it up in gradual stages until it reaches mature manhood and the full
stature of the Christ's  body (1P 2.5; Ep 2 20; 4:12-13). We must decorate
it with the brilliance and beauty of spiritual graces. If it is thus to be
constructed by God, that is to say according to his teachings, it will not
fall. And this house will extend into many others, because all that is
constructed by any believer is to the benefit of us all and for the
embellishment and increase of the blessed city.

Thursday of the Twenty-third week in Ordinary Time

St. Nicholas of Tolentino, Confessor (+ 1310)

Commentary of the day
Blessed Teresa of Calcutta : "Do good and lend, expecting nothing in return"

Reading

Coloss. 3:12-17.
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion,
kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,
bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance
against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do.
And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection.
And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you
were also called in one body. And be thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and
admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with
gratitude in your hearts to God.
And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the
Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Lk 6:27-38.
But to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate
you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well,
and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic.
Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours
do not demand it back.
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even
sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you?
Even sinners do the same.
If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit (is)
that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount.
But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting
nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of
the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Be merciful, just as (also) your Father is merciful.
Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not
be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.
Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together,
shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure
with which you measure will in return be measured out to you."

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1997), founder of the Missionary Sisters of Charity
No Greater Love

"Do good and lend, expecting nothing in return"

Perhaps in an apartment or house next to yours there lives a blind man who
would welcome a visit from you to read the newspaper to him. Perhaps there
is a family that is in need of something of small importance to you,
something as simple as looking after their child for half an hour. There
are so many little things that are so small that a lot of people forget
them.Don't think have to be a simpleton to do the cooking.
Don't think that sitting, standing, coming and going, and all that you do
is not important to God.God does not ask you how many books
you've read, how many miracles you've done. He asks you if you did your
best for his sake. Can you say in all sincerity: "I did my best»? Even if
the best should be a failure, it must be our best. If you're really in love
with Christ, no matter how unimportant your work is, it will be better
done, from your heart. Your work will bear witness to your love. You can
wear yourself out at your work, you can even kill yourself at it, but until
it is mixed with love, it is of no value.

Wednesday of the Twenty-third week in Ordinary Time

St. Peter Claver,Priest (1580-1654)

Commentary of the day
Isaac of Stella : "Blessed are you who weep now"

Reading

Coloss. 3:1-11.
If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is
seated at the right hand of God.
Think of what is above, not of what is on earth.
For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.

Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality,
impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry.
Because of these the wrath of God is coming (upon the disobedient).
By these you too once conducted yourselves, when you lived in that way.
But now you must put them all away: anger, fury, malice, slander, and
obscene language out of your mouths.
Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its
practices
and have put on the new self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the
image of its creator.
Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision,
barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all and in all.

Lk 6:20-26.
And raising his eyes toward his disciples he said: "Blessed are you who are
poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.
Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed
are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh.
Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult
you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.
Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great
in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way.
But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
But woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who
laugh now, for you will grieve and weep.
Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the
false prophets in this way.

Commentary of the day

Isaac of Stella (?-c.1171), Cistercian monk
Sermon 2 for All Saints, 13-20

"Blessed are you who weep now"

"Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted" (Mt 5:5). By
this saying the Lord wants us to understand that the path of joy lies in
tears. It is through desolation one goes to consolation; in losing one's
life that one finds it; in forsaking it that one possesses it; in hating it
that one loves it; in despising it that one keeps it (cf. Mt 16,24f.). If
you would know and have the mastery over yourself, enter within yourself
and do not seek yourself without... Return to yourself, you sinner, return
to where you are, to your heart ... Will not the one who returns to himself
discover himself to be far away, like the prodigal son, in a region of
unlikeness, in a foreign land, where he sits and weeps at the memory of his
father and his native country? (Lk 15,17) ...

"Adam, where are you? "(Genesis 3,9) Perhaps still in the shadows, so as
not to see yourself, you are sewing leaves together in a vain desire to
cover your shame, looking at what is around you and what belongs to you ..
Look inside, look at yourself ... Return within yourself, you sinner,
return to your soul. See and weep for this soul subject to vanity and
restlessness who cannot set himself free from his captivity ... It is
clear, my brethren, that we live outside ourselves, we are forgetful of
ourselves whenever we fritter our lives away in empty pursuits or
distractions decked out with trifles. That is why Wisdom is more concerned
to invite us to the house of repentance than the house of feasting, that is
to say to call back into himself the man outside himself, saying: "Blessed
are they that mourn" and in another passage: "Woe to you who laugh now."

My brethren, let us groan in the presence of the Lord whose goodness moves
him to forgive; let us turn to him "with fasting, weeping and mourning "
(Joel 2,12) so that one day his ... consolation may delight our souls.
Blessed indeed are those who weep now, not because they are weeping but
because they shall be comforted. Weeping is the way, blessedness the
consolation.

Micah 5:1-4.
But you, Bethlehem-Ephrathah too small to be among the clans of Judah, From
you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel; Whose origin
is from of old, from ancient times.
(Therefore the Lord will give them up, until the time when she who is to
give birth has borne, And the rest of his brethren shall return to the
children of Israel.)
He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of the LORD, in
the majestic name of the LORD, his God; And they shall remain, for now his
greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth;
he shall be peace. If Assyria invades our country and treads upon our land,
We shall raise against it seven shepherds, eight men of royal rank;

the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who
is called the Messiah.
Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary
was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found
with child through the holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose
her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him
in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary
your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child
has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save
his people from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall
name him Emmanuel, which means "God is with us."

Commentary of the day

Saint Andrew of Crete (660-740), monk and Bishop
Homily 1 for the Nativity of the Holy Mother of God; PG 97, 805 (trans. Breviary)

Today is the dawn of our salvation

We are no longer to be enslaved by the elemental spirits of the world, as
the apostle Paul says, or held in the yoke of slavery to the letter of the
law (Col 2,8 ; Rom 7,6). This is the summary of the benefits of Christ for
us; this is the unveiling of the mystery; this is nature made new: God is
made man, and human nature assumed by God is deified. But so radiant, so
glorious a visitation of God to us needed some prelude of joy to introduce
to us the great gift of salvation. The present feast is such: the prelude
is the birth of the Mother of God, and the concluding act is the union
which is destined between the Word and human nature. A virgin
is now born..., and is made ready to be mother of God, the king of all for
ever... A double gain will be ours: we shall be led towards the truth, and
we shall be led away from a life of slavery to the letter of the law. How
will this be? Clearly, inasmuch as the shadow yields to the presence of the
light, and grace introduces freedom in place of the letter. The present
feast stands on the border between these: it joins us to the truth instead
of signs and figures, and it brings in the new in place of the old.Let the whole creation therefore sing praise and dance and unite to
celebrate the glories of this day. Today let there be one common feast of
those in heaven and those on earth. Let everything that is, in the world
and above the world, join together in rejoicing. For today a shrine is
built for the Creator of the universe. The creature is newly made ready as
a divine dwelling for the Creator.
